We really like the
performance and sound quality of the Philips-ECG(Sylvania) 6AV5GA in the
Elite80 and
Elite80+
amplifiers. This particular tube appears to be an upgraded
military version of a 6FW5, which is a much heavier dissipation tube.
This heavy duty rare version of the 6AV5GA also has the top getter which
silvers uniformly only the top portion of the envelope, making the
tube's appearance very cool looking. Operating these output tubes modestly
as we do makes an amplifier that not only
sounds very nice, but will also last a long time. If you look around on the web you’ll find an ever
expanding, near cult, listener following of sweep tubes and it seems to be spreading.
So several years back we did some R&D of our own to see just
what could be done with these things. We found a small stash of
the Philips-ECG (Sylvania) 6AV5GA’s and got busy in the lab. And with a
good number of hours and quite a number of circuits later we began to
see what this deflection tube hype was all about.
To make a long story short, these particular deflection tubes are
SIMPLY AMAZING – within their limits of coarse. In our amps they
display everything one wants in full range clean music reproduction. We
have since secured a large number of these premium quality 6AV5GA’s and
can now offer what we feel is a great amplifier at a very reasonable
price and maintain the ability to support your investment for years to
come.
These "Retro" Styled amplifiers have their roots
in the days of the great tube amps, as our Lead Engineer was building
amps in the days that Harold Leak was, and our Lead Audio Engineer has
decades of experience as well. The circuitry is designed with the
shortest and simplest signal path to ensure the smooth, warm sonic
reproduction expected of good vacuum tube equipment.
